Vote for a Proven Leader on November 6th

I need your vote to focus on our future at the Capitol. If elected, you will get an honest, trustworthy, passionate, and dedicated advocate in me. I’m focused on achieving a high quality of life, economic success and stability, and a bright future for all constituents.

What do everyday people have to say about me?

  • "Sarah Carnes has an abounding energy, a vision for the future with a plan to get it done, and a love for people. She has already shown she has what it takes to serve the public." — Christine Wagner
  • "When you vote for Sarah Carnes, you are voting for someone who will be the voice of her constituents." — Kendra J. Abel, Ph.D.

  • "I have known Sarah Carnes for years through church and she has been a wonderful influence through my adolescence! This was my first vote ever and I was so proud to give it to her." — Sarah Eckert
  • "I think a lot of Oklahomans are looking for representatives like Sarah Carnes, that are willing to use common sense, fairness, and a moral compass as a voice for their constituents." — Paul Gibson

  • "Sarah Carnes would not be purely partisan, as too many of our representatives have been, but instead would work with both parties to advance the interests of everyday Oklahomans." — Dennis Purifoy
  • "Sarah Carnes will be a breath of fresh air at the State Capitol because she looks for solutions, rather than getting bogged down in party politics." — Jody Harlan

Focused on People not PACs

Transparency is important in government. I encourage you to review, compare, and contrast both my opponent’s and my campaign donation sources that are available on the Oklahoma Ethics Commission website.

As of 10/29/2018, I have only received nominal funds related to education(AFT $250 and OEA $250) and political party (Canadian County Democrats $350). My opponent has accepted $19,000 in Special Interest PAC funds.

I was raised with Oklahoma values and believe that the primary responsibility of an elected official is to represent "we the people," not special interests. My campaign has been supported by everyday people like you.

I don’t have time for the “strings attached” system. I’m focused on achieving a high quality of life, economic success and stability, and a bright future for our children.

Get to Know Me!

I am a lifelong native Oklahoman and House District 47 resident for 15 years.  Oklahoma is my home.

I've been married to my husband Jeramy Carnes for 19 years and have two daughters who attend public school.  I teach Art at Mustang High School and am very active in our community.  My Christian faith was nurtured at Northwest Christian Church, Disciples of Christ (OKC) and we currently attend United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd (UMCGS).

I am a proven leader.  I have the management, collaboration, and problem solving experience of a veteran teacher.  I am an experienced educator, right down to the "apple core."  I've been locally, regionally, and nationally recognized professionally for my ability to bring people together and achieve exceptional results.  My 20 years experience has developed me into a capable leader who collaborates, actively listens, and applies common sense to solve complex problems.

My campaign has been supported by everyday people like you.  I am focused on achieving the American dream for all: a high quality of life, economic success and stability, and a bright future for our children.  We can't afford more of the same.  The Status Quo Must Go!

I need your vote to focus on our future at the Oklahoma Capitol.  Your vote is precious and should not be given lightly.  If elected, you will get an honest, trustworthy, passionate, hardworking, and dedicated advocate in me.  Please explore my website as you're researching and preparing to vote in the upcoming General Election on November 6th:

I'm glad you've learned little bit more about me and look forward to meeting you at one of my upcoming events in our community!  There are many ways to contact me, including a good old fashioned phone call (405-806-0567).

I was born in a small rural Oklahoma town very much like Tuttle.  So many strong relationships, built over multiple generations, which bind this community together.

I'm so appreciative of all my supporters in Tuttle and throughout House District 47!

Yukon Czech Festival and Parade

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 53rd annual Czech Festival and Parade in Yukon!  Although it was a little wet, rain could not dampen our spirits.

Canadian County Democrat parade volunteers met at Yukon Middle School early on Saturday morning.  Special thanks to my 2018 Dream Team volunteers who worked on the festive float design!  During the afternoon, myself and other candidates met with constituents at the Canadian County Democrat Booth (which was located near 4th and Main by Yukon National Bank).

Teachers Aren't Just Running for Office—They're Winning

"Sarah Carnes, a high school art teacher who's vying for the state House in Oklahoma as a Democrat, said that she makes a point to tell Republican voters: "I'm here to represent everybody, because that's what I've been doing as a teacher."
The experience of working in diverse schools has paid off in her campaign, she said.

"Ultimately, teachers are really good mediators and mentors, and we help solve problems in the classroom, and we work with parents hand in hand," Carnes said. "We want to help everybody, that's why we have giving hearts. I think that's what's connecting and resonating with the constituents right now."

Western Days Bean Poll Insight into Community Issues

A picture is worth a thousand words!

The results of the Canadian County Democrats 2018 Western Days "Bean Poll" were recently published in the Yukon Progress newspaper (see below).  I'm sharing a photograph of the results taken on the day of our festival to illustrate how each individual bean "VOTE" adds up and ultimately impacts the outcome.  It was incredibly inspiring to observe everyone cast their "bean" ballot, but especially the small children who seriously and sincerely contemplated their options.

Teacher Pay and Mental Healthcare clearly emerged as issues concerning Oklahoma House District 47 constituents.  In a nutshell (or bean), these issues directly impact our individual and community quality of life.  These issues will inspire Oklahoma voters to change their future on November 6th by voting in the general election!

What issues inspire you?  Your feedback is critical to me as your future elected representative.  I'm looking forward to working with ALL constituents to focus on achieving a better future.  As always, thank you for your support!

Community Highlights

September is Hunger Action Month.  Please continue to support our Mustang Kiwanis Food Pantry and our neighbors in need.

It's always a pleasure to meet with Oklahoma educators. Especially fun to connect with former teaching colleagues.

Former Mustang High student, resident, and artist Rick Sinnett stopped by Mustang High School after school Friday to see his mural printed on adhesive satin and installed in the teachers lounge.

What a fantastic week connecting with community members!  Each interaction reinforces my understanding of the dedication and talent of individuals who enrich HD 47 and our State.

Suicide Is Falling in Most Parts of The World... Except The US. Here's Why

The article highlights two social factors contributing to this tragic and disturbing trend of suicide in America:

  1. Weakening of the social safety net; and
  2. Increasing income inequality.

Adequate resources and core services must be provided to address mental health and suicide prevention for all Oklahomans, from our students to our veterans.

  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds in our country.
  • Every week in Oklahoma, about 2 young people (age 10 to 24) die by suicide.
  • Oklahoma's suicide rate among male and female veterans and military service members exceeds the national rate for the general population, with about 22 veterans dying daily by suicide.

Sharing the Impact of Kiwanis in My Life with the Mustang Kiwanis Club

I'm energized this morning by the inspiring Oklahoma sunrise and the opportunity to share my personal story about how Kiwanis has impacted my life as a young person, teacher, and community member with the members of the Mustang Kiwanis Club.

David McElhaney of Mustang invited me to this morning's meeting when we spoke for over an hour at his home last Sunday.  We discussed the Northwest OKC Kiwanis Club, Builder's Club, and Key Club and how my engagement in each of their activities played a pivotal role in my life.  Kiwanis influenced the development of my character through positive experiences, including opportunities to serve my community, public speaking, mentorship, and leadership.

Sarah Carnes and David McElhaney, Mustang Kiwanis Club

I encourage you to support the Mustang Kiwanis Food Pantry and the vital services they provide in our community.  Donations and volunteers are always needed at the Mustang Kiwanis Food Pantry, which is open on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 10:00 am and located across from the Mustang Fire Department and just west of the Del Rancho Restaurant in Mustang.

Sarah Carnes Receives OPE4PE Apple Endorsement

Oklahoma Parents and Educators for Public Education (OPE4PE) have recognized Sarah Carnes, HD 47 candidate, with an Apple of Support for Public Education.  "I am proud to be recognized as a supporter of public education.  My dedication over 20 years as a career educator demonstrates my steadfast commitment to Oklahoma students, their parents, and our community.  I am Focused on Education...Focused on Our Future!" said Sarah Carnes when she received the news.

The grassroots education advocacy organization of about 34,000 Facebook members publishes the LIST of candidate endorsement to assist voters in selecting candidates that support public education.

The OPE4PE Facebook group analysis process involves bringing together a team of parents, educators, and advocates to serve as candidate evaluators to apply non-partisan criteria to evaluate candidates.  The OPE4PE evaluation results in endorsements that recognize pro-education candidates with an Apple.  Candidates may also be identified as hazardous for public education with a cautionary Triangle symbol.

OPE4PE encourages voters to use the list as a starting point to acquaint themselves with candidates and make informed decisions when they vote on June 26, 2018 primary election and on November 6, 2018.  The voter LIST is published online.
